Streamlining of processes

Historically, internationally trained physicians have been assessed for licensure based on the jurisdiction in which they completed their training. Recognition of these jurisdictions was overseen by the certifying bodies.

The Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada (FMRAC) is leading an initiative to expand Canada’s approach to jurisdictional recognition in collaboration with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Medical Council of Canada, and Health Canada. Dr. Grant chairs FMRAC’s Committee on Medical Licensure in Canada. The goal is to have in place a broad approach to jurisdictional recognition by mid-2026.

While the national work on jurisdictional recognition is ongoing, the College continued its review of faculties and postgraduate training programs of excellence in jurisdictions that are not generally recognized. We remain the only medical regulatory College in Canada undertaking this work.

The College acknowledges that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship. We also acknowledge that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and we honour and offer gratitude to those ancestors.
